There are so many things to learn, that is, provided that you properly see what is being taught. In the human race, vision can make a difference in one’s learning ability. Learning and vision are closely related. According to experts, 80% of what school-aged children learn is presented to them visually. What this boils down to is that vision is essential for each student to fully reach their academic heights. If the child has vision problems then their leaning will suffer, as they struggle to understand concepts and read.
As Americans, we listen to the authorities. In this case, it is doctors. Eyeglasses and/or contact lenses can help the child that does have a vision problem to see clearly. What was once not understandable, such as the blackboard becomes clear to the child and they can grasp what is going on. For parents that do find that their child is having difficulties in school, the parent needs to have the child’s vision tested. Learning problems are often associated with vision problems which reduce the child’s capability to learn.
Disabilities in Learning and Vision
When a child has learning problems as a result of vision problems, it is not considering a learning disability. The individual with Disabilities Education Act of the US or IDEA, specifically states that individuals with learning disabilities have a disorder in one or more of the fundamental psychological processes which are needed for the individual to comprehend language, either spoken or written. The individual that does have a learning disability will show a lack of ability when thinking, listening, reading, speaking, spelling, writing and calculating. Therefore, vision related learning problems are not a result of a learning disability, but a vision problem. This does not mean that those children that have vision problems do not also have a learning disability, they could. It simply means that testing the child’s vision is the first step in helping them with their learning problems.
Because children and academics are so important, each child should be checked by a certified eye doctor, especially those children that are struggling with their academics and are performing poorly.
Kinds of Vision Problems that can Hinder Learning
When one looks at images through their eyes, it not only involves the vision of the eyes, but the function of the brain as well. There are three categories of vision problems fall into which are:
Refractive Problems
Functional Vision Problems
Perceptual Visual Problems
Children will often have symptoms of visual problems such as blurry vision, strained eyes, crossed eyes, headaches, tilting the head to see an object with only one eye, and so on. Their attention span is often shorter, as well.
Vision problems are not the end of the world. In fact, with a certified eye doctor, you can get right to the bottom of the issue and begin to help your child to function fully. For children with severe difficulties, the child may be treated with the doctor supervised vision therapy programs, which are very individualized to the child. However, most of the time, a simple pair of glasses or contact lenses is all that is necessary.
