Sunglasses – A Journey Through Their History!

Over the years, sunglasses have evolved from just being a necessity to protect the eyes to a status symbol. The development of sunglasses continued to evolve into what they are today. Today, many online sellers offer an extensive range of designer sunglasses, including Giorgio Armani sunglasses, Ray-Ban sunglasses, and Christian Dior sunglasses.

However, have you ever wondered how, where, and when these sunglasses for men and women were invented? Let’s take a short journey through the history of these much-celebrated sunglasses!
It was during the reign of Roman emperor Nero that sunglasses started taking shape to evolve into what they are today. While watching the gladiator competitions, the emperor held polished emerald green gems to his eyes. It is how the whole concept of sunglasses started.

Designer sunglasses can also be dated back to the twelfth century in China when the Chinese judges used smoke-colored quartz lenses. Contrary to what you might assume, the initial purpose of sunglasses was not to protect eyes from the sun. They were worn by the judges just to cover up their eye expressions. The reason behind this was to keep the evidence’s evaluation a secret until the judge concluded.

Later, in the eighteenth century, James Ayscough, an England designer came up with eyeglasses with blue or green-tinted lenses. Although these eyeglasses didn’t offer sun protection, they made a breakthrough in the history of designer sunglasses.

Sidepieces, which were once silk strips of ribbon, gradually transformed into solid pieces in 1730. Finally, after several phases of development, sunglasses served the actual purpose of sun protection in the 20th century, when Sam Foster introduced protective sunglasses into the market.

The development continued and in the 1930s, sunglasses that reduced high-altitude sun glare were developed exclusively for pilots. It was followed by the invention of the Polaroid filter in 1936. 1937 was the time when Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses made a splash and the credit goes to the celebrities who wore them in the public. Today, not just most celebrities, but also commoners depend on these sunglasses to make a style statement while protecting their eyes.

Well, evolution will continue!
