Types of Safety Glasses

One type of injury that no one would ever want to endure is an eye-related injury. We all know that our eyes are precious and one of the most sensitive parts of our bodies, which is why we need to protect them at all times. This is why choosing the best safety glasses or other safety eyewear is essential for protection and care. Not only are they designed specifically for impact protection and shields from debris, but there are also many other different styles and types created with added details for a variety of environments.

Safety glasses have already been around for several decades and while there have been many advancements made with them, they are still essentially the same design as in the beginning.

Today’s safety glasses are usually made of polycarbonate, plastic or a special shatter proof glass that is strong enough to protect eyes from various injuries and dangers. The glass lenses do not scratch easily but can become quite uncomfortable due to their weight. On the other hand, plastic lenses are much lighter than glass but are also more likely to get scratched.

There are many designs available to protect eyes from flying debris, splatters and other hazardous materials. Finally, Polycarbonate lenses are stronger and more impact resistant and scratch resistant compared to the plastic and glass types.

Regardless of the material used in safety eyewear, it is important to have lenses that measure at least 1 millimeter in thickness. Safety eyewear is sometimes called “dead on” because they only protect the user’s front eyes but because of the advancement in the development of safety glasses, the dead on safety eyewear has improved to protect the user from the front of the face and also from the sides.

There are different types of safety glasses that you can choose from depending on your specific needs. There are both, prescription and non-prescription safety glasses, safety goggles, specialized face shields, welding helmets, and full-face respirators. The type of safety eyewear that you should use greatly depends on the activity at hand. They can be used to protect eyes from blood splatters, sawdust, flying debris, hazardous fumes, ultraviolet light, infectious chemicals and even insects that may irritate the sensitive eyes.

No matter the activity you have, do not forget to protect your eyes. Know that all of the hazards around can easily be prevented with a good pair of safety glasses.
